Marvelous, Muddy "M" - Mud, Monkeys, Music, and Mice.
Day 1: M is for Mud & Messy Play
Focus: Sensory exploration and the humming /m/ sound (like something is "mmm-mmm" delicious)
Lesson: Introduce the letter M. It looks like two mountain peaks side by side. Practice the /m/ sound—keep your lips pressed together like you just ate something yummy!
Craft: Mud Painting. Mix a little dirt with water (or use brown tempera paint) and let the children paint "Mud Monsters" on cardstock.
Activity: The Mud Kitchen. Use your backyard space to let the kids make "Mud Pies" with old bowls, spoons, and water. Talk about how the mud feels (Mushy, Muddy, Moist).

Song: "The Muddy Puddle Jump."
Tune: The Hokey Pokey
You put your left boot in,

You do the Muddy-Puddle-Dance and you turn yourself around,

Snack: Mud Pudding (Chocolate pudding with crushed Oreos on top).
Day 2: M is for Monkey
Focus: Gross motor skills and counting.
Lesson: Discuss Monkeys. They love to swing and make "M-M-M" sounds when they find bananas.
Craft: Paper Plate Monkey. Paint a plate brown, add big "M" shaped ears, and a long curly tail made of brown construction paper.
Activity: Monkey See, Monkey Do. A version of Follow the Leader where children have to mimic your Movements exactly.
Books to Read: Caps for Sale (The monkeys are very mischievous!).
Song: "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed."
Tune: Traditional
Five little monkeys jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head! (Hold your head and look sad)
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said, (Pretend to hold a phone to your ear)
"No more monkeys jumping on the bed!" (Wag your pointer finger back and forth) (
Repeat down to zero monkeys)
Snack: Mashed bananas or Mango slices.
Day 3: M is for Music & Movement
Focus: Rhythm and auditory discrimination.
Lesson: Talk about how Music is made of different sounds. Explore different Melodies.
Craft: Maracas. Fill plastic eggs or small bottles with rice or beans. Tape them shut and decorate with "M" stickers.
Activity: Musical Statues. Play some upbeat Music. When it stops, everyone has to freeze like a Marble statue!

I play the m-m-maracas! (Shake your hands back and forth)

Snack: Melon medley (Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Honeydew).
Day 4: M is for Mice & Mountains
Focus: Size comparison and soft sounds.
Lesson: Contrast a tiny Mouse with a giant Mountain. Practice whispering "m-m-mouse" and shouting "M-M-MOUNTAIN!"
Craft: Mouse Masks. Use gray paper triangles for the face, yarn for whiskers, and pink circles for the nose.
Activity: Mountain Climbers. Use your outdoor play equipment as a "Mountain." Have the children "climb" to the top and yell "I am on the Mountain!"

Snack: Miniature Muffins or Mozzarella cheese sticks.
Day 5: M is for Moon & Moonlight
Focus: Review and night vs. day.
Lesson: Review all "M" words. Discuss the Moon and how it shines at night.
Craft: Foil Moons. Wrap cardboard circles in aluminum foil to make shiny "M-M-Metallic" moons.
Activity: Moon Walk. Have the children move in slow-motion around the yard as if they are astronauts walking on the Moon.
