Exploring the Philippines

Learning Objectives:

Materials:

  • World map or globe

  • Simple bamboo sticks or rhythm sticks

  • Pictures of the "tinikling" dance

  • Rice, coconut flakes, and mango (for a simple taste test)

  • Art supplies (paper, crayons, markers, paint, colored paper)

  • Sensory materials (seashells, sand, rice grains)

  • Sampaguita (national flower) pictures or artificial flowers

  • Pictures of a Carabao (national animal)

Daily Activities:

Day 1: Introduction to the Philippines

  • Circle Time:

    • Locate the Philippines on a world map or globe.

    • Show pictures of the Philippines and discuss its location as an archipelago (a group of islands).

    • Introduce basic Tagalog greetings (kumusta, salamat).

    • Play Filipino folk music.

  • Activity:

    • Create a simple map of the Philippines showing the islands.

    • Sensory exploration of seashells, sand, and rice grains.

Day 2: Filipino Clothing and Traditions

  • Circle Time:

    • Show pictures of traditional Filipino clothing (Barong Tagalog, Maria Clara dress).

    • Discuss the significance of these clothing items.

    • Introduce the concept of "mano po" (respectful gesture to elders).

  • Activity:

    • Create paper versions of traditional clothing using colored paper.

    • Practice the "mano po" gesture.

    • Make flower leis using paper flowers or yarn.

Day 3: Filipino Food

    • Show pictures of Filipino food (adobo, sinigang, rice, mango).

    • Taste test: Rice with coconut flakes and a small piece of mango.

Day 4: Filipino Music and Dance

    • Listen to Filipino folk music and learn simple lyrics.

    • Show pictures of the "tinikling" dance (bamboo dance).

    • Practice simple rhythm patterns with bamboo sticks or rhythm sticks.

    • Watch a video of the "tinikling" dance and try simple movements (without the bamboo).

    • Create artwork inspired by the colors and patterns of Filipino textiles.

Day 5: Sampaguita and Cultural Art

    • Introduce the Sampaguita (national flower) and discuss its significance.

    • Show examples of Filipino folk art and crafts.

    • Discuss the importance of family and community in Filipino culture.

  • Activity:

    • Create Sampaguita flower crafts using white paper or cotton balls.

    • Create Filipino-inspired artwork using bright colors and patterns.

    • Review all the things the children learned about the Philippines.

    • Have a small cultural sharing party.
