Playful, Peppy P - Pirates, Pigs, Puddles, and Planting

Day 1: P is for Pirate

Focus: Introducing the letter shape and the /p/ sound.

  • Lesson: Introduce the letter P. It’s a tall line with a Puff on top! Practice the "p-p-p" sound—it’s like a tiny burst of air.

  • Craft: Pirate Eye Patches. Use black cardstock and elastic or yarn. Let the children decorate them with silver "P" stickers.

  • Activity: The Backyard Plunder. Hide "gold" (painted rocks or yellow blocks) around your yard. Have the children hunt for the Pirate treasure while shouting "Ahoy, People!"

  • Books to Read:

  • Snack: Popcorn and Pineapple chunks.

Day 2: P is for Puddle & Polka Dot

Focus: Sensory play and patterns.

  • Lesson: Discuss Puddles. What happens when rain falls on the Pavement?

  • Craft: Polka Dot Puddle Art. Use blue watercolor paint on paper. While it’s wet, have children drop "dots" of dark blue or purple paint to create a Polka dot effect.

  • Activity: Puddle Jumping. If it’s raining, put on boots! If not, use blue paper cutouts on the grass as "pretend" Puddles. See who can jump over the widest one.

  • Books to Read:

  • Snack: Pretzels and Pears.

Day 3: P is for Pig & Pizza

Focus: Animal sounds and food science.

  • Lesson: Discuss Pigs. They love to Play in the mud. Practice the "Oink" and "P-P-P" sounds.

  • Craft: Paper Plate Pig. Paint a plate Pink. Add two triangular ears and a Pink button for a snout.

  • Activity: Pizza Parlor. Use your play kitchen or outdoor tables. Let the kids "make" Pizzas using circles of cardboard and red/yellow yarn.

  • Books to Read:

    • Tune: The Wheels on the Bus

  • Snack: Pocket Pizzas (English muffins with sauce and cheese).

Day 4: P is for Planting & Peas

Focus: Life cycles and nature.

  • Lesson: Talk about how we Plant seeds in the Patch of dirt.

  • Craft: Peapod Prints. Dip your fingers in green paint and make a row of "Peas" inside a drawn Peapod.

  • Activity: The Planting Race. Give each child a small Pot and some soil. See who can Plant their "magic" seed (a lima bean) the fastest.

  • Books to Read:

    • Tune: The Farmer in the Dell

  • Snack: Peas in the pod or Peas and carrots.

Day 5: P is for Picnic & Parade

Focus: Community and review.

  • Lesson: Review all "P" words. Discuss having a Picnic together.

  • Craft: Parade Banners. Decorate long strips of Paper with the letter P. Tape them to sticks.

  • Activity: The Joyful Parade. March around your backyard with your banners and Pirate hats. Play your Maracas from last week!
